1

My name is Sophie, and I experience many different feelings throughout my day. Some feelings are big and energetic, while others are calm and quiet. Understanding my feelings helps me know what my mind and body need.

2

When I first wake up in the morning, my body feels rested and my mind feels fresh. This calm, quiet feeling is peaceful. It helps me start my day gently and prepare for what comes next.

3

As I eat breakfast and get ready for school, my energy begins to grow. I feel more alert and ready. This growing energy feeling is important because it helps my body prepare for activity and my brain prepare for learning.

4

At school, my feelings change throughout the day. During lessons, I feel focused and interested as I learn new things. This concentrated feeling helps me pay attention and understand what my teacher is explaining.

5

When I'm playing soccer at recess and in practice, my feelings become excited and energized. I feel alive and powerful. This big, energetic feeling is wonderful because it shows me how much I love what I'm doing.

6

Sometimes during the day, I feel frustrated when something doesn't go the way I planned. Maybe I make a mistake in math or miss a goal in soccer. Frustration is a signal that I care about doing well, and it's showing me that something matters to me.

7

After school, when I'm doing something I love like drawing or making friendship bracelets, I feel creative and relaxed. This calm-but-engaged feeling helps me express myself and create things I'm proud of. My mind feels happy when I'm creating.

8

As evening comes, my energy naturally slows down. I feel more peaceful and quieter inside. This calm feeling is my body's way of preparing for rest. It's a signal that my mind and body need to relax and recharge.

9

Before bed, I feel sleepy and content. This sleepy feeling is perfect - my body is telling me it's ready to rest. Listening to this feeling helps me fall asleep easily so I can wake up refreshed tomorrow.

10

All of my feelings throughout the day - peaceful, energetic, focused, excited, frustrated, creative, calm, and sleepy - are important and normal. Each feeling is giving me information about what I need. By noticing my feelings, I'm learning to take care of myself and understand myself better.

Social Story Methodology

Why This Story Works

This story uses Carol Gray's descriptive approach to help children recognize that feelings are normal, predictable signals rather than confusing or overwhelming experiences. By mapping Sophie's emotional journey across a full day—from peaceful mornings through excited play to calm evenings—children with autism and anxiety learn that feelings follow patterns and serve a purpose, reducing the fear and shame often attached to "big" emotions like frustration.
