My name is Sophie, and I'm getting ready for school. Every morning, I make my own healthy lunch and pack my backpack. These routines help me have a great day at school because I know exactly what I need and what I'll eat.
Making a healthy lunch is important because it gives my body fuel and energy for my soccer practice and learning at school. When I eat nutritious foods, my brain works better and I feel stronger during the day.
I start by choosing the different parts of my lunch. I pick a protein like cheese or turkey, vegetables and fruit for vitamins, a whole grain bread or crackers, and sometimes a small treat. I think about what will keep my energy up during the day.
I place my choices into my lunch container, arranging them so everything fits nicely. I make sure to pack my lunch in a way that keeps cold foods cold, like using a small ice pack, so my food stays fresh until lunchtime.
Next, I pack my backpack. A well-organized backpack helps me remember everything I need and keeps me prepared for the day. I check a list I've written down so I don't forget anything important.
I put my packed lunch into the front pocket of my backpack first. Then I add my water bottle, which I need to stay hydrated during the day. Water helps my muscles work well, especially when I'm playing soccer.
I add my folders and notebooks next. I organize them by subject so I can find what I need quickly during class. My pencil pouch with all my writing and drawing supplies goes into the side pocket where it's easy to reach.
Finally, I check my list one more time to make sure I have everything. I've packed my lunch, my water bottle, my schoolwork, my supplies, and my sports equipment. Everything is organized and ready for the day ahead.
When I prepare my lunch and backpack in the morning, I'm setting myself up for success. I'll have the energy I need to focus in class, play soccer, and enjoy time with my friends. Getting ready feels good because I'm in control and prepared.
I know that taking care of these morning routines helps me feel ready and calm. When I make healthy choices about my lunch and prepare my backpack thoughtfully, I'm taking care of myself and setting myself up for a day where I can do my best.
Social Story Methodology
Why This Story Works
This story breaks down the multi-step morning routine into concrete, manageable sequences that reduce decision fatigue and anxiety—two significant challenges for children with autism and ADHD. By showing Sophie organizing her lunch with specific categories (protein, vegetables, whole grains, treat) and then systematically packing her backpack by priority, the story provides a predictable template that transforms an overwhelming routine into a series of clear, achievable steps. Carol Gray's methodology shines here because the story doesn't just describe what Sophie does; it explains *why* each step matters (energy for soccer, hydration, organization for quick access), helping children internalize the logic behind the routine rather than simply following instructions.
